Take advantage of the early snow falls this year and get off piste in style

Stop waiting for the ski season to kick in, it already has. Despite it still being early in the season, many Alps resorts have already received suitable dumps of snow and are now welcoming skiers in their droves as the good quality powder has left resorts looking like mid-winter. In a record breaking appearance, top resorts in France, Switzerland and Austria have been able to open their lifts early thanks to an unprecedented dump over the last few weeks.

After the impact the credit crunch had on last season’s skiing, now seems to be the time to hit the slopes. Many online hubs have started offering superb early-bird deals, aiming to make the most of the great conditions and also ensure packed runs compared to last year’s.

Likewise, as it’s still early in the season, it’s easy to look good on the slopes without nursing the debt for the rest of the year. Both online and High Street favourites have cottoned on to the ski style and have launched men’s ranges that do the job when you’re off piste and still look great in the après-ski bars.

For a lot of skiers, the après-ski style is just as important as looking right on the snow. Whilst you’ve got to be comfortable and dry, your clothes must be able to ‘breathe’ too, as it can get pretty crowded in those huts and you don’t want to start sweating after a pint or two. The secret here is layers: under your ski jacket wear a thin fleece, under the fleece a jumper and under that don’t forget the vest. For men, more dual-purpose ski-style jackets are hitting the shelves this winter, with a noticeable biker influence, and for that jumper, try something with a chunky knit – like a classic Arran Isle sweater.

Looking good at the bar and wearing the right gear all comes down to skiing’s popularity with the wealthy and successful, however this doesn’t have to equate into spending a month’s salary on the best clobber. Many would argue specialist ski brands are the only ranges worth considering before you buy that lift pass, as they offer tried and tested durability, but men’s fashion has finally latched onto the growing après-ski market and the ranges hitting the stores this winter could put an end to that as attention to detail sees ski essentials take on a new, and cheaper, lease of life – just what you need post-recession!

So when you logon to find that perfect pre-Christmas snow getaway, be sure to check out some of the mens fashion too – you could be pleasantly surprised.
